Coach happy with U-16 netball squad
NATIONAL Under-16 netball coach Marvette Anderson is happy with the squad selected to represent Jamaica at the 2014 Jean Pierre Youth Tournament scheduled for April 6-12 in Antigua and Barbuda.
“I believe that this selected squad is the right set of girls to represent Jamaica at the championship. These girls have represented their respective schools well and so I know that they are the right choice; they were chosen based on their performances in the school leagues,” coach Anderson told the Jamaica Observer recently.
Anderson, who has coached several teams in the Business House Netball Association (BHNA) competition during the 1990s, said that the present squad has some very experienced players.
“I am very confident in these girls, we have some top-class netball players in the squad who I know will get the job done for us.
“There is Simone Gordon, who was a part of the Under-19 team that took the bronze medal in Scotland. There is also Carlalee Tingling, who was a part of the Under-16 team that took the gold medal in Bermuda. They know how to play as a team and the fact that they are comfortable in training tells a lot,” Anderson added.
She noted that although the team is young she expects them to go all the way.
“The team itself is young, but theses girls have played well and they are training well also. I expect the team to win. Jamaica have won all the Under-16 Youth Championships that they have entered except for 2005 in St Kitts when they came second, but this time is a sure winner,” she said.
Squad– Simone Gordon, Tracy-Ann Francis, Nichole Lewis, Idara McCarty, Carlalee Tingling, Shanique Francis, Hasana Williams, Bless-sade Lindo, Susan Douglas, Shauna-Kay Shand, Christina Miler and Sashoya Britton.
Head coach, Marvette Anderson; Assistant coach — Yvonne Dixon-Price; Manager — Lydia Wilks, and Physiotherapist — Dr Joan Rattray.
The team is sponsored by Bank of Novia Scotia (BNS) and uniform sponsors Gilbert.
