TG stop August Town 3-1 to lift Jackie Bell KO Trophy
TIVOLI Gardens defeated nine-man August Town 3-1 to lift the Kingston & St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Jackie Bell Knockout Trophy for the third time at the Drewsland mini-stadium on Monday night.
At the conclusion of the game the Jackie Bell Trophy, medals and a winner’s cheque of $350,000 were presented to Tivoli Gardens, while August Town were presented with medals.
Earlier, despite the margin of victory, it was three the hard way for Tivoli Gardens as it took extra time and a depleted August Town to earn their third hold.
The win also gave coach Glendon ‘Admiral’ Bailey his fourth successful hold on the Jackie Bell Trophy. It was the second for him with Tivoli Gardens. His first hold was with Duhaney Park, and with Arnett Gardens after moving from Tivoli Gardens.
Both Tivoli Gardens and August Town campaign in the Red Stripe Premier League with Tivoli Gardens currently teetering on the edge of the top four places, while August Town are sitting at rock bottom of the points standing.
However, it was August Town who took the lead through Rohan Williams in first-half stoppage time, as just reward for looking the better co-ordinated team at play. Just before the break Davion Alves, who was cautioned in minute 38, received his second caution and was sent packing.
Seemingly encouraged by the now under-strength August Town team, Tivoli Gardens returned for the second half more into the game and duly levelled the score in the 57th minute through Andre McFarlane. After this the game gradually developed into a dog fight with Tivoli Gardens being the benefactor after Jeffrey Grant, who after picking up a caution in minute 82, drew the ire of referee Wilverglen Lamey and was shown a straight red card two minutes later.
With no addition to the score, extra time was introduced and even with two players short it was August Town who got the opportunity to take the lead, but Jerome Wedderburn, with only goalkeeper Edsel Scott as the last line of defence, wasted the chance.
Two minutes later Tivoli Gardens took the lead through second-half substitute Navion Boyd, and with one minute to go, Kemar Flemmings made the game safe by beating Devon Haughton from close-up.
