‘Frog’ faces ‘Tiger’ in Contender Boxing Series
Richard ‘Frog’ Holmes, Jamaica’s up-and-coming welterweight boxer, will begin his quest for a piece of the $3 million at stake in the 2014 Wray & Nephew Contender Boxing Series against Guyana’s Gladwin ‘Tiger’ Dorway, as the clash between Team Jamaica and Team Caribbean continues at the Chinese Benevolent Association Auditorium on Old Hope Road this evening.
Three bouts are carded with fight time set to begin at 7:30 pm with the main bout set to begin at approximately 9:30 pm.
Holmes and Dorway are among 16 professional boxers from Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean who are down to compete as the Green Team Jamaica and Yellow Team Caribbean fighters for a share of nearly $3 million, with the winner pocketing $2 million and the title of Jamaica’s Ultimate Welterweight Contender.
Holmes, 24, has so far taken part in the last two editions of the Contender Series and has a career record of four wins and three losses against Dorway, 26, who has three wins and one loss.
To make the Contender Boxing Series ultra competitive, for the first time it has opened its door to Caribbean fighters and on opening night last week Wednesday, a sell-out crowd was on hand to be royally entertained by Jamaica’s Sakimo Mullings, who scored a fourth-round knockout against another Guyanese, Revlon Lake, after being behind on points in the opening rounds.
In the first stage of the series there will be eight fights of six rounds each. Stage two will have four fights each of six rounds, with stage three boiling down to two fights going eight rounds each at which point only two boxers will remain standing.
At the point of stage four the two finalists will battle over 10 rounds to determine the number one contender.
To determine how one boxer gets to face an opponent during the next seven weeks, the two teams will engage in a series of weekly physical challenges. The winning team will then have the advantage to nominate a boxer from their camp as well as choose the opponent from the losing camp. Juliet Cuthbert is the motivator.
