Beyond the finish line — Sonita Sutherland
Sonita Sutherland
ONLY a few years ago, Sonita Sutherland of Holmwood High School, went down in the annals of Boys and Girls Championships as one of the best female 400m runners in Champs history.
At Champs 2004, when Sutherland was still riding the success of her World Junior 400m silver medal, she ran a blistering meet record of 52.41 for 400m event, defeating Sherene Pinnock of Edwin Allen High who ran 53.60.
In the following year, 2005, she played a role in two Boys and Girls Champs records. First, she broke a seven-year-old 400m record held by Keisha Dowder (52.32), clocking 52.10, beating Sherene Pinnock again who ran 52.89. Sutherland was also a part of the Holmwood 4x100m relay team that clocked a 44.25 meet record.
In 2006, Sutherland ran a personal best of 51.13, which is her personal best to date.
After leaving Holmwood High, Sutherland went on to the GC Foster College, and in her third year went on to become a Central American and Caribbean relay gold medalist.
