Jamaican female refs create history
FIFA referee Cardella Samuels and FIFA assistant referees Stacy-Ann Greyson and Princess Brown have created history in becoming the first full team of officials to have been appointed to do duty at a FIFA World Cup tournament.
The trio is down to officiate at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica from March 15 to April 4, this year.
They were due to leave the island today for Costa Rica, seven days ahead of kick off.
Peter Prendergast, the first Jamaican to hold the whistle in a FIFA World Cup when he did duty at the 2002 tournament co-hosted by South Korea and Japan, will also be in Costa Rica as a technical instructor for the referees.
Owen Powell was the first Jamaican referee to officiate at the World Cup as an assistant referee at the France 1998 edition, where it was also a first for Jamaica’s senior men’s national team.
