REVISED! – COCAA adjust points standings in Western Champs
MONTEGO BAY, St James — THE disqualification of Rhodes Hall’s Toju Johnson and docking of points from Rusea’s High’s Shanice Cannigan have resulted in an adjustment to the points standings in the recent County of Cornwall Athletics Association’s (COCAA) Gatorade/Hanover Co-Operative Credit Union Western Champs.
The points deduction will not affect the overall champions, as both Munro College boys and St Elizabeth Technical girls extended their margins at the top of the table as a result.
Johnson had won the boys’ Class 3 200m and was second in the 100m to Cornwall College’s Akeem Gordon, but was disqualified after it was later discovered that he should have competed in Class 2. He was also part of the team that was sixth in the Class 3 4x100m relays, and his team lost 20 of the 25 points they had originally earned during the three -day championships that were held last month.
Ironically, another Rhodes Hall athlete, Maneesh Vassell, who was fourth in the 200m, moved up to the third place position and earned an additional point.
Herbert Morrison’s Samuel Smith is now the official winner of the 200m followed by Cornwall College’s Gordon, while William Knibb’s Akeen Morris who was third in the 100m would now get the silver medal. Munro College’s Andre Edwards who had placed fourth will now take the bronze medal.
Rusea’s Cannigan was discovered to have competed in one more event than she was allowed under the rules of the competition that limits athletes to four events,
including relays.
She had won both the Class 1 girls 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles and was second in the high jump, while running on both the Class 1 4x100m and 4x400m Open relays.
The points from the 400m hurdles, the last individual event she had competed, were subsequently deducted from the Ruseas’ total.
Another Rusea’s athlete, Lamara Distin who had set the Class 3 high jump record was promoted to the gold medal position in the 400m hurdles, with two STETHS athletes, Delecia Mattison and Shadea Holness, moving into second and third positions respectively.
Munro College gained four points to move to 387, while STETHS who were second, gained one- 380 in the boys standings- while third place Petersfield High failed to gain. Cornwall College inched up a point to 193 and Herbert Morrison added two more to be on 156.
In the girls section STETHS gained 12 more to be on 380 to increase their margin over Rusea’s which fell back to 209.5, while Herbert Morrison moved up to 200 points, adding 12; Petersfield moved from 113 to 115, while Green Island jumped to 87 points and into fifth place ahead of Mannings School and Spot Valley High-82 each.
