V’Kickers, Seba in St James Senior League derby
WESTGREEN, St James — One of St James’s biggest rivalries will be reignited today when former champions Violet Kickers and Seba FC meet in a St James Football Association Sandals/ATL/Honda Senior League game at Westgreen starting at 3:00 pm.
The teams were part of a dominant western contingent in the 1980s and 1990s when they won several titles at the parish level, as well as two Premier League titles each.
Both fell from prominence and had name changes before reverting to their original names. Violet Kickers was changed for a brief period to Mt Salem United before taking back the name about five years ago, and won a St James Senior League title spending two seasons in the Western Confederation Super League, before returning to parish football.
Seba are trying to emulate their more famous predecessors Seba United, who have since changed their name to Montego Bay United.
After the name change from Seba United to MBU three years ago, the remnants of the Seba United club that did not make the switch started a club, North Gully Ambassadors, who rose through the ranks, winning the Division Two and Division One and were finalists in the Senior League last season, beaten by Montego Bay Boys’ Club.
In two meetings last season, North Gully Ambassadors had beaten Violet kickers twice, but trail the leaders in the points’ table so far. Violet Kickers are on top of Zone B with eight points, while Seba FC are in fourth place on five points, tied with Revelations.
Seba are coming off their first loss of the season, going down 0-2 to Little Miami on Friday, two days after Violet Kickers were held 1-1 by Lilliput Rovers at Wyndham.
Two more games will also be played today, Catherine Hall will hope to snap their two-game losing skid in Zone A when they take on Fogo United at Wespow Park, while Seaview FC and Montego Bay United Under-21 will both continue their search for a first win this season.
Catherine Hall got off to a fast start, winning their first two games, but have since hit a bump and lost the next two by a 0-4 aggregate.
Fogo on the other hand have won their last two games after drawing the losing their first two and are on seven points, a point behind joint leaders Reggae Youths and Melbourne United.
Montego Bay United Under-21 gave up a lead against Melbourne on Friday and were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw, but are expected to have the edge over Seaview, who have conceded a league-high 16 goals in four games played.
MBU Under-21 have scored just two goals, with both coming on Friday against Melbourne.
