Flurry of matches in school table tennis
Five matches — one urban and four rural — were played on Thursday as the ISSA/Securipro Table Tennis Competition continued.
In the urban contest, defending champions Campion blanked visitors Hillel 3-0 in girls’ Under-16.
In the rural encounters, hosts St Mary High clipped Guy’s Hill 3-2 in boys’ Under-19 and hosts Dinthill crushed newcomers McGarth 4-1 in boys’ Under-16, in the North Eastern Zone.
And in a double-header in the Central One Zone hosted at Manchester High, Manchester clipped Glenumir 3-2 in boys’ Under-19, and Glenmuir trounced Manchester 4-1 in boys’ Under-16.
The two matches in the North Eastern Zone completed the fixtures for the respective categories, thus deciding the advancing teams. In the Under-19 category, former champions St Mary High finished with maximum eight points, ahead of Dinthill’s six and Guy’s Hill four.
St Mary High qualified for the final and Dinthill progressed to semi-finals.
In the Under-16 category, Dinthill finished with maximum eight points, followed by St Mary High, six points, and McGarth, four.
Dinthill will advance to the final and St Mary High to semis.
In the Central One Zone in boys’ Under-19, Glenmuir have completed their fixtures with 11 points and lead the standing ahead of Manchester, nine points (one match remaining), Knox, four points (two matches left to play), and deCarteret, three points (three matches remaining).
In Central One Zone in boys’ Under-16, Glenmuir widened their lead atop the standing and have now finished their fixtures with maximum 12 points. They are followed by Manchester on eight points (one match remaining), Knox, four (two matches left to play), and deCarteret with two points (three matches remaining).
Campion extended their lead in the girls’ Under-16 Group One standing with Thursday’s victory. They now have 10 points, ahead of Hillel, eight, and Wolmer’s Girls and Ascot on six points each. Campion and Hillel each have a match remaining, Wolmer’s Girls have two matches left, and Ascot have played all their matches. The top two finishers will progress to semi-finals.
In individual results in the St Mary High/Guy’s Hill duel, Denzel Buchanan outplayed Zarique Thompson 3-1, Oshane Panton overpowered Delano Scott 3-0, and Odane Weir blew away Kamar Tucker 3-0, for St Mary High’s three triumphs.
Dylon Panton got by Demario Duncan 3-1 and Courtney Andrade overcame Odane Mighty 3-1, for Guy’s Hill’s two consolation wins.
