Boxers win 2 silver medals in Guyana
WELTERWEIGHT boxer Kestna Davis and middleweight Michael Gardener won silver medals last Sunday night in the finals of a four-nation Goodwill International tournament in Georgetown, Guyana, from February 14-16.
Participating territories were Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and St Lucia.
In the finals, Davis lost to Guyana’s Eon Bancroft by split decision, but the head coach of the Jamaica team Carl Grant said that the consensus was that Davis was the better boxer and should have got the decision.
Gardener also lost by split decision to another Guyanese boxer Dennis Thomas, but Grant felt that this bout was very close and could have gone to either boxer. Each boxer won a round clearly and the third round was hard fought and close, and the Guyanese was given the edge, he said.
The other members of the Jamaica team were coach Godfrey Collins, lightweight boxer Patrick Sahadeo and light welterweight Anthony Clarke.
