1 dead, 71 hurt in eastern Cuba bus crash
HAVANA, Cuba (AP) —Cuban media say an overloaded truck used as a bus has crashed on a mountain road in the eastern province of Granma, killing a 17-year-old boy and injuring 71 people.
Juventud Rebelde reports that the vehicle was carrying more than 70 passengers when the driver lost control Monday morning.
A photograph on the newspaper’s website shows the overturned rust-orange truck with its front end crumpled.
The boy who died was the driver’s assistant. Those with injuries were hospitalised, and officials said none were life-threatening.
Communist Party newspaper Granma said yesterday that the vehicle was carrying “more passengers than allowed”. It said a preliminary investigation suggests the truck-bus was not adequately equipped to carry passengers along the steep, curvy roads
