Dane and georgina
The eighth race on last Saturday’s 10-race programme came down to a finish involving Georgina Sergeon on Powerful Red and champion jockey Dane Nelson on Sir Willie.
Powerful Red led in the straight and looked all over a winner, until Nelson brought Sir Willie with his winning run. In the last three strides Nelson was able to sweep by Powerful Red, winning by a short head.
The nail-biting finish brought the house down at the Park as most punters wanted the country’s only female rider to win. Even diehard supporters of Nelson were of the view that the champion should have allowed Sergeon to win.
Such, however, is the harsh nature of horse racing. It was a close finish and both riders were smiling as they exchanged comments while waiting for the official result.
