Talented Tony K takes Sir Howard Stakes
In a gate to wire performance, the Lorne Kirlew-trained bay colt Talented Tony K easily disposed of his five rivals to win the 19th running of the Sir Howard Stakes restricted to three-year-old colts and geldings, the feature race on yesterday’s nine-race card at Caymanas Park.
After hustling to the front when the gates were opened, Talented Tony K (Traditional-Ocean Liner) was challenged for a while by Mr Awesome, but moved away nicely in the last furlong of the slated six to win by four-and-a-half lengths over Mr Awesome with Dagga Dagga Links third.
It was Talented Tony K’s second victory from three starts to date. He completed six furlongs in a time of 1:14.2 minutes.
“He ran as I expected. There is still more work to be done but Talented Tony K is coming on well, and as the trainer, I am very happy with his performance although I expected a better time.
“Training will now begin in earnest, as he was lightly trained coming into this race. He can only get better from here,” Kirlew told the Jamaica Observer.
The secondary feature on the programme, the George HoSang thophy went to Man Alive (Dane Nelson) in a hectic finish coming down the five straight course. Man Alive, trained by Richard Azan, won in a time of 58.3 seconds.
The tranquility of a peaceful yet exciting Sunday afternoon of racing was shattered in the day’s fifth race when 94-1 outsider Yes She Will, ridden by O’Brien White, won by a short head over Raj Kapoor who went off at odds of 10-1. Yes She Will, owned by popular entertainer Coco Tea, paid $4,755 to win and $843.00 to place. The quinella with Raj Kapoor paid a whopping $100,939 and the exacta $98,559.
