Pelican defeat Mico ‘B’ to capture Open League title
UNIVERSITY of the West Indies (UWI) Pelicans defeated Mico ‘B’ 37-24 to capture the 2013/2014 Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS)/Netball Jamaica Open League competition at the Leila Robison Courts on Saturday.
It was also their first hold on the coveted title which was won only by Waulgrovians ‘A’, JAMALCO and Tivoli ‘A’.
It was also the first time that two of these three teams have not contested the Open League semi-finals and final, respectively. Goal-shooter for UWI Pelicans, La Donna Lamonth, was named the Most Valuable Player of the final. Winning captain, Vanessa Jones, said her team did extremely well.
“The team came all out to win and they did just that… we are very happy for this victory as we worked hard throughout the season for it,” she said.
Losing captain Suzette Case said her team did not capitalise on the many turnovers. “We had allowed UWI Pelicans to get the better of the early exchanges from the very first quarter.
Added to this, the players lost possession of the ball too easily, and that’s why we went down in defeat,” Case said.
Meanwhile, Mico ‘A’ beat Cablepro 30-25 to win the Consolation Open League final.
