Bonner comes down hard on himself
THOUGH he was Jamaica’s only centurion in the recent NAGICO Super50 tournament in Trinidad & Tobago, top-order batsman Nkrumah Bonner expressed disappointment with his overall performance in the competition.
Bonner, who arrived home with several of his teammates on Sunday, told the Jamaica Observer that bad shot selection led to his and the team’s downfall in the semi-final loss to the host nation.
“A century is the hallmark for any batsman, it is a great feeling to get my second (50-over) century in a tough game on a tough wicket and it assisted my team to victory in that particular game so I am happy.
“Things didn’t go as planned, I got a start in the second game (against Ireland) and I didn’t carry on and when you get a start as a batsman you need to carry on. And if I had batted through in the semifinal game maybe it would have been a different game,” he said.
The 25-year-old led the team’s batting in the tournament with a total of 146 runs, which included a match-winning score of 122 not out against Guyana in the final match of the zone stage.
His knock piloted the team to the top of the Zone and into the semi-finals. Opener John Campbell, who made a top-score of 71 against Ireland, shared the sentiments of his teammate.
“I got a score which boosted my confidence but after that game I didn’t get any runs so it was a disappointing tour for me,” the 20-year-old lefthanded batsman said.
Andre McCarthy, who bats in the middle order, said the team did well to make the semi-final, but he felt his individual performance was below his pretournament ambitions. He promised he will be working hard to improve his game.
“My overall performance needs a lot of improvement.
I always set a high goal for myself and after starting the tournament very well, I didn’t carry on, but it’s a learning process and there are areas that I need to improve on,” said the 26-year-old, who made a top score of 93 in the opening game against the Windward Islands.
The team will resume training on Thursday as they set sights on the upcoming Regional Four-day competition.
