Copperwood, Heights score contrasting wins in St James football
GRANVILLE, St James — Copperwood FC and Heights scored contrasting wins as the St James Football Association Dennis Barton/Weston King Division One competition kicked off with three games on Monday.
Mathew Shaw and Richard Hayles both scored doubles for Cooperwood, who spanked Granville City 5-2 at Sam Sharpe Teachers College, while Heights came from behind twice to beat Marl Road 3-2 at the UDC field to share the lead on points in Zone A.
In the other game played at Irwin High, Irwin FC and Salt Spring Roses drew 0-0 in a Zone B game.
At Sam Sharpe TC, the visitors Copperwood led 2-0 at half-time with goals from Shaw and Hayles.
Shaw opened the scoring after nine minutes, while Hayles doubled the lead after 41 minutes then made it 3-0 in the 46th minute to complete his double.
Kenneth Roach pulled one back for Granville City in the 53rd minute, a minute before Shaw completed his double, while Clifton Atkins scored in the 58th minute to make it 5-1 for Copperwood.
Dwayne Samuels then scored in the 60th minute to cut Copperwood’s deficit to three.
Heights scored two second-half goals to come from behind twice to get full points from Marl Road.
Oraine Reid gave Marl Road the lead in the sixth minute, but Jason Taylor equalised for Heights in the 10th minute. Lenroy Willie restored Marl Road’s lead in the 25th to take his team to the half-time break.
Obrien Bailey again levelled the scores for heights in the 64th minute before Kemar Forrester scored the winner in the 85th minute.
