Okeen Williams sets one of seven records at Western Relays
Catherine Hall, St James — St Elizabeth Technical High School’s Okeen Williams got the records going at the 36th staging of the Milo Western Relays when he ran 52.24 seconds to win his pet 400m hurdles event at the Montego Bay Sports Complex yesterday.
He thus erased the old record of 53.20 seconds set in 2008 by Steve Banton.
Williams was making his seasonal debut after ending last season on a disappointing note when he hit a hurdle and fell out of competition in the final of the event at the World Youth Championships in Ukraine.
His compatriot Marvin Williams went on to win the gold medal.
Yesterday Okeen Williams finished ahead of Jamie Demna of UTech (53.32 seconds), and Marvin Williams 53.72 seconds in heat three.
At press time seven records were established, and Kingston College took a clean sweep of the 4×100 metres relays.
The records to go were the Class Three boys’ 4x100m to Kingston College in 44.08 seconds; Class Three girls’ 4x100m to Hydel in 46.38 seconds; Oweneika Watson of Holmwood in the Class One girls’ 100m hurdles in 14.45 seconds; MoBay Prep in the 4x100m in 57.37 seconds; Hydel Prep in the Under-13 boys’ and girls’ 4x100m relays in 52.18 and 54.15 seconds, respectively. MVP’s Nadine Palmer, Carrie Russell, Jeneive Russell and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce ran 43.37 seconds to win the women’s 4x100m.
