WHAT THEY SAY – DELROY BEHARIE
When did you start your career as a jockey?
I started my career as a jockey in July of 2006.
Which horse was your first winner?
My first winner came aboard Mark to Market, trained by Wayne DaCosta, over the 1000 metres straight course.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
My longest odds winner so far is Piece A Foot who won over 1400 metres at 35-1.
Which is the best horse that you have ridden?
The best horse that I have ridden so far is Heart of Gold. she was a great racehorse in my view, who was very powerful and she stayed very well. I felt very good when I was riding Heart Of Gold. There are others, of course, but Heart Of Gold is the best so far for me.
Which is the best horse you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
The best horse for me is Miracle Man. He was an outstanding colt who was very versatile, and won some pretty good races here in Jamaica. He was a big, strong horse who would give his all every time he went on to the racetrack. Miracle Man showed how good he was when he went abroad and won one of the big ‘classic’ races. Miracle Man is definitely one of the best horses to have graced the track at Caymanas Park. It was a privilege seeing him race.
Who has influenced your career the most?
My brother and sister have both played important roles in the development of my career as a jockey. They have always been there for me, when the times have been good and when the times have been bad. They provide encouragement and they are always urging me to go forward. They have always been there for me and they are still sticking with me whatever the situation may be. I thank them for their assistance and encouragement.Sherdon Cowan
