Record 22,000 for Sagicor SIGMA Corporate Run
The Caribbean’s largest 5K road race, Sagicor SIGMA Corporate Run is set to make history yet again as it has now surpassed the target of 22,000 participants.
Aimed at raising $18 million for its charities, some 22,210 individuals were said to have registered when the process closed on January 31.
Since 1999, the run has raised over $118 million which has funded everal charities, including the jamaica Foundation for Cardiac Disease; Sophie’s Place & Mustard Seed Communities; Bustamante Hospital for Children; UHWI Sickle Cell Unit; Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre; UHWI Leukaemia CARE.; National Blood Transfusion Service; UHWI Labour Ward; Jamaica AIDS Support for Life; renal units of the Cornwall Regional, UHWI and Kingston Public Hospitals, paediatric wards for Spanish Town, May Pen, Victoria Jubilee, Savannah-la-mar, Mandeville and Cornwall Regional Hospitals.
Also benefiting were the Jamaica Society for the Blind and Jamaica Association for the Deaf, Victoria Jubilee Hospital’s NeoNatal Care Unit, Chain of Hope Jamaica in support of the Cardiac Programme at Bustamante Hospital for Children, Jamaica National Children’s Home and Best Care Lodge.
Last year, 20,501 persons registered to walk, run or wheelchair with 100 per cent of proceeds raised donated to charity. As a result, $16,026,870 was allocated between the Bustamante Hospital for Children, Jamaica National Children’s Home and the Best Care Lodge.
This year’s beneficiaries are the Sickle Cell Unit at UWI with support for the Sickle Cell Trust in Mandeville, the Special Care Nursery at University Hospital and the Jamaica Kidney Kids Foundation.
The run is set to take place on Sunday, February 16, starting outside Sagicor’s headquarters on Knutsford Boulevard,
New Kingston.
