Hyatt to know today if surgery is required for nose break
BATSMAN Danza Hyatt will know today if he will require surgery to fix a nose break he suffered after being hit by a delivery from pacer Andre Russell during a national practice match at Sabina Park over a week ago.
The cricketer told the Jamaica Observer that no corrective action had been taken previously due to the extensive swelling in and around the affected area.
“Tomorrow [today] I’ll go back to the doctor and then decide if I’ll do surgery to straighten it. So after tomorrow I’ll know what to do, because it is not as swollen as it was.
“I would prefer if I don’t have to do surgery, but if they say surgery I’ll do it,” the 30-year-old right-handed batsman said yesterday.
The Catherine CC player, who has played nine One-Day and five Twenty20 (T20) Internationals for the West Indies, said his vision, which was also affected as a result of the blow, is back to normal.
He said, however, that there is still some discomfort to contend with.
“I’m still taking the painkillers that I received, and with the swelling down, my eyes are back to normal. But it’s the nose I have to deal with. I’m still having the tension headaches and that’s my main worry from the hit right now,” he explained.
Hyatt, a reserve member of the Jamaica set-up after failing to make the final 14-man squad for the ongoing NAGICO Super50 tournament in Trinidad & Tobago, was struck by a bouncer from Russell on January 25 — days before the side departed the island.
The batsman missed an attempted pull shot and the ball squeezed between the peak of his helmet and the protective grill to crash into the bridge of his nose, causing instant bleeding and triggering panic among the players.
He was subsequently taken to the University Hospital of the West Indies by a teammate.
Hyatt, who first played for the Jamaica senior team in 2004, averages 26.04 from 51 first-class matches. In 50-over cricket he averages 27.21 in 41 games.
