It’s all set and ready for the Heineken Caribbean Association of Neurosurgeons (CANS) golf tournament set for Ironshore club in Montego Bay today.

The event, organised by neurosurgeons and sponsored by Heineken, will see part proceeds going to the University Hospital of the West Indies.

Nasha Douglas, Heineken brand manager, who applauded the doctors for their initiative, was just happy to be on board as sponsors.

“We are currently in the process of putting the final touches together for the golf tournament,” Douglas told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.

“Heineken will be providing a premium bar service for all attendees and managing all other hospitality elements,” she noted.

“In addition to the above, we will have our premium reserve offerings on sale and part of those proceeds will go to supporting the charity,” Douglas added.

Heineken’s contribution is said to be $1.5m and the tournament is expected to have between 80 and 100 golfers who will play over 18 holes.

There will be a section for professionals and two sections for amateurs. Amateurs with 0-10 handicap will contest stroke play, while those with handicaps 11 and above will play the stableford format.

Organiser David Mais, at the press launch last week, indicated that this year’s renewal could be the biggest yet.

Many overseas participants are expected for the tournament, including 16 or 17 pros with a number of amateurs doubling up to be a part of the Jazz and Blues Festival.

Dr Carl Bruce, consultant neurosurgeon at the UWI Hospital, a brainchild behind the tournament, said at the launch that the aim is to raise enough money to buy surgical instruments for the hospital.

Last year the proceeds went into the purchase of a radiolucent frame for spine surgery.
