Last chance for Soca Princesses to qualify for U-20 WCup
TRINIDAD and Tobago will have their last chance at creating history by qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Women’s Under-20 finals scheduled to be staged in Canada, in August, when they meet the Costa Ricans in a do-or-die match-up in the CONCACAF Women’s Championship third-place play-off today.
The game will be played at 4:00 pm at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex in George Town, Grand Cayman, before the grand finale between the football kingpins USA and Mexico at 7:00 pm.
In the semi-finals, Costa Rica lost to Mexico 1-3 and the USA outplayed Trinidad and Tobago 6-0. Scoring for Mexico were Paloma Zermeno in the 32nd, Fabiola Ibarra in the 67th, and Jessica Valadez in the 73rd ,while Costa Rica’s Jasmin Elizondo scored the lone goal for her team in the 17th minute.
The goal scorers for the USA were McKenzie Meehan in the 13th and 65th minutes, Savannah Jordon in the 29th, Stephanie Amack in the 33rd and 39th, and Mallory Weber in the 85th.
A place in the FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup Finals would be a feather in the cap of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) as it would mark the first time in the history of the Caribbean that a women’s team would qualify at that level.
According to Trinidad and Tobago’s head coach Izler Browne, Costa Rica is not an easy team to beat, but if her team plays well they can come out with a win.
“Costa Rica is not a run-over team, but we have a tremendous chance because if we play well we can come out with a win and qualify for the World Cup and give the Caribbean something to be proud of,” Browne said.
Three teams from the CFU entered this championship — Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and hosts Cayman Islands — however, only the Soca Princesses triumphed to this stage with the hope of making it to the top three.
