Petersfield on course in ISSA/Wata football
PETERSFIELD, Westmoreland — Petersfield High are on course to qualify for both finals of the ISSA/Wata Rural Area Under-14 and Under-16 football competitions after making it to the semi-finals on Friday.
The Petersfield Under-14 team topped Group B with seven points, ahead of Vere Technical (five). Meanwhile, the Petersfield Under-16 team was second on goal difference to St Elizabeth Technical High School in Group B after both finished with seven points each.
The other qualifiers in the Under-14 competition are Old Harbour High and Grange Hill, both in Group A. Defending all-island champions Cornwall College and Manchester High qualified from Group A of the Under-16 competition.
In the last four match-ups set for Tuesday, Old Harbour will play Vere Technical in one Under-14 encounter, while Westmoreland neighbours Petersfield and Grange Hill meet in the other.
In the Under-16 competition, Cornwall College, who have won all 12 games played this season, face Petersfield High in one semi-final, while STETHS take on Manchester High in the other.
The finals of both competitions will be played on Thursday.
There will be no all-island play-off this season. It has been learnt that due to the late start of both competitions, there will not be enough time before the school term ends.
On Friday, both Petersfield age-group teams scored 2-1 victories, over Munro College Under-14s and Rusea’s High Under-16s, respectively.
Old Harbour Under-14s beat Spalding High 4-1, Grange Hill and Clarendon College drew 1-1 and Vere Technical got three points from Manchester High, who did not turn up for their own home game.
In the Under-16 competition, Cornwall College shook off a persistent Paul Bogle High to win 6-1 as five goals went in during a 16-minute period after the latter fought back from being a goal down.
Former national Under-15 representative Jourdane Fletcher scored a three-timer for Cornwall after also getting both goals in their 2-0 victory over Annotto Bay earlier in the week.
Fletcher gave Cornwall the lead in the 16th minute when his shot was deflected by a defender but Paul Bogle hit the Cornwall goal post late in the first half and then again early in the second period.
They eventually drew level six minutes into the second half when Ronaldo Bailey took full advantage of a disorganised Cornwall defence to fire home from close range.
Akeem Miller gave Cornwall their second lead of the match in the 56th minute before the flood gates were opened. Venton Evans made it 3-1 in the 60th minute, Alrick Ottey added the fourth in the 62nd, while Fletcher completed his treble in the 66th and 72nd minutes.
Meanwhile, after having their season-long unbeaten run snapped at Cornwall, Annotto Bay crashed out after being beaten 5-1 by Manchester High. STETHS got the points from Seaforth, who failed to show up for their game.
