King of ’em all
JAMAICA College (JC) confirmed their status as the best schoolboy team in the island easily outclassing St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) 2-0 in the second leg of the all-island ISSA/LIME Olivier Shield for a 5-0 aggregate win.
Playing at the Stadium East field at Independence Park, goals by Sheldon McKoy in the 10th minute and Ramone Howell in the 35th propelled the boys from Old Hope Road to an easy win in which they could have scored a few more times had they so desired.
The gulf in class was obvious with JC barely coming out in a canter, making the game look like a light training session. So effortless was JC’s victory that one fan kept reiterating that the rural area daCosta Cup is division one and Manning Cup is premier league.
To say that STETHS were taught a lesson in football would be an understatement. It was embarrassing, to say the least. So poor were the STETHS team that their few attempts at goal were cheered on ironically by the JC fans.
It is JC’s 18th lien on the all-island trophy, continuing the dominance of the Corporate Area teams that have won the last seven editions. Glenmuir High were the last rural school to win the Olivier Shield, in 2004, and they also shared it in 2006 along with Bridgeport High.
Winning coach Miguel Coley didn’t really expect such an easy victory, but admitted that STETHS’ style of play against other daCosta Cup teams would not worry his boys. “They played a lot of long balls and our defensive unit had no problem with that and they played basically in our hands.
Our team is a class team and the STETHS team is playing against a quality team so that prevented them from playing their own game,” he told the Jamaica Observer. STETHS coach Omar Wedderburn heaped praises on his conquerors for their splendid performances over the two legs, but he also praised his team for a wonderful season.
“We had more ups than downs and I appreciated that because our boys stood up and fight to the very last. We have two trophies to defend next year, so I am feeling good for them,” said Wedderburn.
Following their 0-3 first leg home defeat in Santa Cruz, the pressure was too much for the travelling STETHS and they crumbled to an embarrassing defeat. They had to score first to make a game of the contest, but that never materialised.
It was JC who took control early and put the contest to bed. Sheldon McKoy tapped home from close range after latching onto Raffique Bryan’s right-sided cross in the 10th minute, which knocked the wind out of STETHS. It took the 23rd minute for STETH to have their first shot at goal which went wide.
With JC’s Junior Flemmings coming close twice and McKoy lobbing wide, STETHS got their first real chance in the 35th minute as Khesanio Hall saw his point-blank shot blocked on the line. Seconds later, JC countered with Ramone Howell, who outpaced the last defender and slotted home.
