Johnson continues dominant form in JN Open Champs
TOP seed and defending champion Damion Johnson easily disposed of unseeded Jason Caloo in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 in the 2013 Jamaica National (JN) Men’s Open Tennis Championships at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston on Sunday.
The right-handed Jamaican number one player Johnson will be in action tomorrow against another unseeded opponent.
Meanwhile, second-seeded Dominic Pago, who lost in the final to Johnson last year, crushed unseeded Brandon Tom in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 to easily move into the next round.
The left-handed Pagon gave Tom little chance of making a match of it as he pounded him with serves.
Other seeded players advancing to the next round are Yussuf Migoko, who whipped unseeded Cliff Dwyer in straight sets 6-1, 6-1; Daniel Gyles who defeated Barry Hazel 6-4, 6-2; Garth Darby beating Donald Sutherland in straight sets 6-2, 6-1; Stefan Wilson crushed Kemar Bryan 6-0, 6-0; Richard Dystant beat Jason Allen 6-1, 6-0.
Matches scheduled in the Men’s Open this afternoon starting at 5:00 are Peter Berry vs winner of Garth Darby/D Sutherland and Jevaughn Mullings vs Donovan Crumbie. At 6:30 pm, Allan McNab vs Ricardo Dystant; winner of D Hill vs S Morrris vs G Cox or S Pinchas.
Dane Vernon vs the winner of the B Hart and C Barrette; Wilson vs the winner of the J Jones and A Harris encounter at 7:30; Will Oton vs Lloyd Allen, Gyles vs Jeremy Miller, Julius Biggs vs Mivkel Riley at 8:30.
Meanwhile, results of matches last Sunday in the Men’s Class Three singles are: Lenworth Murray beat Alphonso McLean 6-1; 6-0; Julius Biggs beat Jevan Hewitt 6-4; 6-0.
Men’s Class Two singles saw Andrew Tom beating Fabian Vassell 5-7, 6-2 (tie-breaker 10-8); Lloyd Allen beat Marlon Brown 6-2, 6-3; Rudolph Jackson Jr gained a walkover David Issacs; Will Iton beat Nigel Casserly.
Matches scheduled this afternoon in the Men’s Class Two are Neil Daley vs Luke Bucknor and Andrew Tom vs Lloyd Nelson at 5:00.
Play in the Men’s Class Three are Marlon Hosang vs Lynworth Murray; Alvin Wint vs Garen Williams at 6:30; David Thompson vs Nelson Forysthe; Michael Lyncock vs Franklyn Grenion at 7:30.
