What if Portmore lose again?
A win result must be the order of the day for struggling Portmore United when they travel to Boys’ Town as the former are reeling at the bottom of the 12-team Red Stripe Premier League.
Portmore United, champions back in 2012, are rooted to the bottom of the league with six points from nine games and if the trend continues, Calvin Lewis could be the second coach to part ways with the club following Linval Dixon.
The former champions have won just once, lost five times and drawn three games and are trailing the leader by 13 points. Luckily for them, the format has been changed, allowing the top eight to engage in a playoff of which Portmore are still in the runnings.
But had the competition remained a straight league format, Portmore United would basically be out of contention as things are at the moment.
As it stands, they are just four points out of the top eight, so there might not be the need for drastic changes right now.
However, a win is of paramount importance as they try to really kick-start their season and Boys’ Town, in eighth spot on 10 points, will be in for a hard time despite playing at home.
Meanwhile, leaders Montego Bay United on 19 points tackle fourth-placed Humble Lion on 14 points in the marquee match-up of the day at Effortville.
Montego Bay United, under the tutelage of Donovan Duckie, have rattled up six wins from nine matches and hold a two-point lead atop the standings.
By their recent 3-0 mauling of title favourites Waterhouse, Montego Bay have sent a strong message to the rest of the teams that they mean business. And with their young and deadly strike force of Dino Williams, Allan Ottey and Bahamian Lesly St Fleur, they will be hard to contain.
Champions Harbour View, with their fourth win in their last five games, have surged impressively into second spot on 17 points and are heavy favourites to secure another win over an August Town outfit in ninth spot on 10 points.
Harbour View could assume sole leadership for the first time this season with a win and a defeat for Montego Bay United.
Third-placed Tivoli Gardens, on 14 points, will be aiming to stay in touch with the leaders when they host a dangerous and inconsistent Sporting Central Academy down in 10th spot with 10 points.
Cavalier on 13 points and promoted Rivoli United with 12 points clash at Stadium East in a game that could go either way.
Cavalier have lost their last two matches and will be hoping to halt the slide, while Rivoli United saw their three-match unbeaten run ended last week by Waterhouse. Both teams are on the rebound and searching for victory.
