Schafer nominated for ‘German Football Ambassador’ title
HEAD coach of Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz Winfried Schafer has been nominated along with two others for the title of German Football Ambassador.
Schafer, who has been working in Jamaica for the past four months, is being recognised for his work in parts of Africa, Asia and his home continent of Europe.
The other nominees for the 2014 prize are Monika Staab (women’s national team coach Qatar) and Klaus Staerk (technical manager of the Namibian Football Association).
In May next year, the winner of the award will be announced by the judging panel of Uwe Seeler, Rainer Holzschuh, Dr Martin Schaefer, Lutz Pfannenstiel, Doris Fitschen and Peter Lohmeyer.
In a brief presentation in Kingston, Schafer was formally presented as a nominee for title of German Football Ambassador by founder of the charity organisation, Roland Biscof.
The title also carries a monetary prize as well, which will go to the youth departments of two football associations, along with social projects in Jamaica. The sum was not available at press time.
“I feel very honoured. I worked in Africa, Arabia, Southeast Asia and also recently in the Caribbean. That’s why I feel always like an ambassador of football. All over the world, football is much more than just a sport, it offers many possibilities to do good. Therefore, it is marvellous to be a part of the committed charity-initiative,” Schafer said.
The German had travelled to many countries as a football coach and has celebrated considerable personal and sporting success. In both Thailand and Cameroon today, he enjoys high respect because of his past work as a national coach.
Schafer, the former German Bundesliga instructor, who coached German stars Oliver Kahn, Mehmet Scholl and Oliver Kreuzer at the Karlsruher SC, records his greatest success when he won the African Championships with Cameroon in 2002. Also to his credit, was leading Thailand national team in the South-East Asia Championships in 2011. He has also coached clubs in Dubai, Azerbaijan and Thailand.
Also attending the presentation at the German Consulate in St Andrew was president of the Jamaica Football Federation, Captain Horace Burrell.
