MORE MONEY!
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The richest ever Jamaica Football Federation’s (JFF) Western Confederation Super League will get under way Sunday with a double header at Jarrett Park featuring the last two champions — Wadadah FC who will hope to defend their title won last year — and Savannah SC, the previous champions.
At Tuesday’s press launch at the Royal Decameron Hotel on Gloucester Avenue in Montego Bay, it was announced that Charley’s JB Rum would be co-sponsors along with long-time sponsors Captain’s Bakery and Grill for a total of $3.2 million, each putting up $1.6 million for the competition that will see 12 clubs hoping to earn promotion to the 2014-2015 Premier League competition.
On Sunday, Savannah SC, winners in the 2011-12 season, spending one season in the Premier League before being demoted, will take on promoted Lucea FC in the first game set to start at 4:00pm, followed by a game between Wadadah FC and Tomorrow’s People which is set to start at 6:00 pm.
Twelve clubs drawn from the four western parishes and including promoted teams Duanvale FC of Trelawny, Montego Bay Boys Club of St James, Sandals Whitehouse of Westmoreland and Lucea FC of Hanover, will participate in the competition that will see each team playing each other on a home-and-away-basis with the top four on points at the end of the second round, qualifying for the semi-finals.
The semi-finals will be played on a return basis with the winners on aggregate playing in the final.
The clubs started to benefit from the improved sponsorship almost immediately, as on Tuesday all clubs were presented with $50,000 each from the organisers to assist with their preparations for the season.
Linnell McLean, president of the Western Confederation said at the launch that while the sponsors would not be able to finance the teams to the level they would want to, “we are ensuring that the clubs get more benefits”, adding that “we spoke to the clubs and one area they said they needed more help was in travelling allowances”.
McLean, as well as Captain Horace Burrell and Wayne Soltau, both of Captain’s Bakery and Grill, welcomed Charley’s JB Rum as co-sponsors for the competition.
