Rocketman set for winning debut
JAMAICA’S doyen of thoroughbred racing the eminent trainer, Philip Feanny, who seems to have his best crop of youngsters for many seasons now, will unleash another of his juveniles in the $715,000 Royal Lancaster Trophy highlighter at Caymanas Park today.
His entry is Rocketman, a well-grown bay colt by the promising but now deceased imported stallion Shuffling Madness out of Shawnee Sunrise (Roar) bred at YS (1955) Ltd.
Owned by Balkrishen S Maraj, Rocketman makes his debut among maidens in a special weight contest for native-bred two year olds. Post time for the 1,000 – metre event is set for 3:00 pm with first post set for at 12:00 Noon.
Off spring of Shuffling Madness have already visited the winners’ enclosure, and judging from the preparation of Rocketman a winning debut is anticipated even though he will be running against six rivals who already have a feel for competitive racing. Among them is the Wayne DaCosta prepared The Dictator, a chestnut colt, also by Shuffling Madness out of Millenium Princess (Mutakadim).
On the dam side, The Dictator is bred for speed while Rocketman out of Shawnee Princess will enjoy it much longer, however, as juveniles distance should not be too much of a consideration, especially at this stage of their development. Readiness for racing and adaptability in a juvenile’s preparation must be the key factor outside of a natural inclination to run fast.
Richard Mairs who rides a number of winners for the Feanny stables will have the leg up on Rocketman while The Dictator who showed positive signs on last going 1200 metres will now have the services of former champion jockey Dick Cardenas.
Of the other debutants, the Anthony Nunes-trained Relampago is also expected to give a good account against his age group while running in a competitive situation for the first time. A bay colt by Seeking The Glory out of Jettish (El Tish) bred by Orange Valley Estates and owned by Elias Haloute has been fairly well tuned for his debut race after he was scratched by the vet and turned away from the gates on his intended debut, November 13.
