Sporting coach demands greater discipline after nervous win
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Linval ‘Pala’ Wilson, the caretaker coach of Sporting Central Academy, is demanding greater discipline from his players for the remainder of the Red Stripe Premier League season.
Leading 3-1 against August Town with just about 15 minutes to go in Sunday’s fixture at Juici Patties Park, Sporting went all-out for a fourth goal – until they were caught on the counter; Jerome Wedderburn firing home to give the visitors a fighting chance in the dying moments.
Eventually, Sporting did weather the storm to prevail 3-2 for their first win in four games after goals from Andre Morrison and Francois Swaby had earlier overturned the visitors’ 25th-minute lead, given to them by Kevin ‘Pele’ Wilson from the penalty spot.
However, Coach Wilson was not happy with such a nervous finish.
“These players are too undisciplined,” fumed Wilson, who is in charge of Sporting following the recent resignation of head coach Merron Gordon. “We can’t be leading by two goals with 15 minutes to go and still be playing so open. We should be passing the football around to see out the game.”
He added: “This is something that we will definitely have to sit down and talk to them about, because we don’t want this sort of thing to happen again.”
Nonetheless, he was grateful for the victory, which could have been by a much wider margin had the likes of Richard Reid and Gregory Lewis been more composed in front of goal.
“At the end of the day,” Wilson noted, “a win is a win, whether by two goals or by one.” And he’s now taking aim at their two remaining games – away to Tivoli Gardens and at home to Boys’ Town – in the first round.
“As I told the players before this game, we need to take nine points from these three games to move up the table. This was the first three so we have six more to get,” he said.
For August Town, who were the only unbeaten team after six games, the defeat was the third in a row. The promoted outfit, having now slipped one place down to eighth in the 12-team league, are now joined by Sporting on 10 points.
Their biggest issue with Sunday’s defeat was with referee Dwight Royal. August Town complained that, in addition to making a number of poor decisions, Sporting Central’s last goal – scored by Swaby for his fifth of the season – was “a big offside.”
