‘Garvey’ power into D’Cup final
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Garvey Maceo High booked a spot in the the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup final after blanking Frome Technical 2-0 at the St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) field, yesterday.
Captain I’ishmale Currie opened the scoring when his cross-turned-shot flew past goalkeeper Omeally Perrin in the 34th minute.
Currie, a national youth player, engineered the second when he dribbled down the right side and crossed for Ryan Scott to finish off in the 70th minute.
The Clarendon-based Garvey Maceo will battle either St Elizabeth Technical or Port Antonio High for the rural area daCosta Cup crown.
The STETHS and Port Antonio semi-final is slated to be played today in St James.
Garvey Maceo coach Lenworth Gordon was left pleased after his team dominated yesterday’s game from start to finish with a robust, but intelligent approach.
“We are a balanced unit and we wanted this… we wanted to give good team work and reach the final.
“We defended stoutly today and we passed around the ball well in midfield. The chances were created and we scored twice,” Gordon told the Jamaica Observer.
Frome Technical’s coach Marvin Quarrie conceded that his team came up short against a physically stronger opponent.
“We were up against a more physical Garvey Maceo and I think that’s where we lost the game. I’m disappointed we lost the game but it’s been a long season and we didn’t have the depth in the squad to match them,” Quarrie said.
Frome’s Othneil Dale had to be substituted after a blow to the head suffered in a collision with a another player in the build-up to the opening goal.
He was treated on site and recovered well enough to walk around on his own, but the Observer was unable to confirm if he was given further medical attention.
