Jockey John Velazquez recovering after accident
NEW YORK (AP) — Jockey John Velazquez is still recovering from injuries he sustained when his mount broke down in the Breeders’ Cup.
He needed surgery to remove his spleen and repair a damaged pancreas. Secret Compass had to be euthanised after the accident in the Juvenile Fillies race on November 2 at Santa Anita.
Velazquez on Tuesday thanked his doctors at the California hospital where he spent five days recovering. He stayed another five days in the state before returning home to New York.
The jockey’s doctors in New York say he’s progressing well and is set to meet with them in December.
Velazquez, 42, says he’s looking forward to a full recovery, although no time table has been set for his return to riding.
