Queen’s, St Hugh’s, Tarrant advance in Senior League
THE Queen’s High, St Hugh’s and Tarrant came out victorious in their respective semi-finals in the 2013 ISSA/Digicel Urban High Schoolgirls Netball League at the Leila Robinson Courts yesterday.
Queen’s, who are the defending champions for both Junior and Senior Leagues, defeated Camperdown High and St Andrew to reach the final. They beat Camperdown 25-18 in the Juniors and 48-25 in the Seniors.
Meanwhile, many-time Senior League champions St Hugh’s had to work harder to beat Holy Childhood 34-27 in their Senior League encounter, while Tarrant came out 25-18 winners over Norman Manley High in their Junior League semi-final.
Marvette Anderson, coach of both Queen’s Junior and Senior League teams, said she is very happy for both wins and will be looking forward to the finals where it will be other tough encounters.
“It is the first time Queen’s senior team was pushed to the limit this season and the girls played extremely well,” Anderson said.
She said St Andrew played well but they have a fairly new team, but Queen’s are more experience and held their own nicely despite a spirited challenge from her opponents.
“Playing StHugh’s in the Senior League final next Wednesday won’t be easy as they will not be sitting back and allow us to dictate the match,” she added.
Roy Pryce, coach of St Hugh’s, said the game between Holy Childhood and his team was a good one and the girls played well.
“We, however, had to fight hard in the early quarters before applying more pressure to pull away to a good win,” Pryce said.
Meanwhile, Tarrant will be playing in the Junior League final for the first time, and coach Cecile Knight was very happy for the win.
“It was not an easy game with Norman Manley… it was very closely contested until we stepped it up in the fourth and final quarter to come out winners,” Knight said.
Meanwhile, Shanice Beckford scored 42 goals from 44 attempts in Queen’s win. They led 26-13 at half time, while Orneilla Walters scored 13-22 and Antonia Mason 12 from 15 attempts for St Andrew.
Kadie-Ann Duhaney scored 32 goals from 39 attempts for St Hugh’s, who led 28-19 at half time, while Dominique Grant got 18 from 21 for Holy Childhood.
