May Pen talent woos audience
KINGSTON, Jamaica — May Pen’s home-grown talent illuminated Digicel’s Brighten Someone’s Christmas roadshow held in the town centre in Clarendon on Saturday.
The town erupted with cheers from the audience as singers and dancers from neighbouring communities took the stage.
Guests were treated to the dazzling vocal range of 11-year-old Raihanna Mitchell, Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s 2013 Gospel Singer winner in the Primary School category.
Mitchell, encouraged to perform at the road show by her dad Gregory, had the May Pen crowd humming along as she performed Keisha White’s The Weakness In Me.
DJ Neil, whose given name is Roy Samuels, delivered a brilliant performance with his original single Money Fi Spen.
The 26-year-old said he has been doing music since nine, but has been seriously pursuing it as a career for the past six years.
Tahnida Nunes, Digicel senior sponsorship manager, was impressed with May Pen’s talent pool.
“This is why we enjoy these roadshows, it allows performers from the nook and cranny of the island to take centre stage. Jamaica has a lot of great talent and Digicel is committed to unearthing them,” she said.
There were also performance from Bugle, Digicel Rising Star 2013 Winner Verlando Small, Agent Sasco, and Digicel brand ambassadors Tifa and I-Octane.
The roadshow also featured giveaways of credit, 4G-enabled smartphones and data plans while nearly 200 children received Christmas toys.
