Goat Islands ‘hub’ has big political capital
FOR those of us who have objected to the industrial development of Goat Islands on the grounds that it falls within an area deemed ‘protected’, the main arguments that the Government is using is that there are no alternative sites for a trans-shipment port, the Chinese are the main investors in Jamaica and, without actually saying it out loud, whatever the Chinese wants, they will get.
In other words, the Chinese have identified Goat Islands as one main spoke in the much-talked about logistics hub, and if Jamaica does not hand over the little islands to the Chinese, our hopes for future development and the creation of jobs, jobs, jobs will tumble into nothingness.
In reality, Jamaica’s options are few and, the very fact that investors are not piling on top of each other to plough their money into Jamaica, it becomes extremely difficult to shy away from an investment of US$1.5 billion.
