$2m boost for Portmore T20 cricket league
The 2013 Wray & Nephew/Portmore Cricket Association Club T/20 Cricket Championship received a $2-million boost, it was announced at a press conference at Ken’s Wildflower on Tuesday night.
Speaking at the media function, Wray & Nephew’s marketing manager, Cecil Smith, has given his company’s commitment to go another innings after five consecutive years at the crease sponsoring the community-based league.
” We have been on board with the PCA for some time now and hope to continue our support in building cricket in Portmore,” he said.
Meanwhile, Jamaica Cricket Association president hopeful, William ‘Billy’ Heaven, in his capacity as chief executive officer of the state-run Chase Fund, committed $500,000 to the competition, which marks the second year.
President of the Portmore Cricket Association, Courtney Francis, urged stakeholders within Portmore to climb on board in order to assist with the development of PCA as it seeks to employ and empower young people from communities in and around Portmore.
The league, which consist of 16 teams divided into two zones, will be played at three venues — Bridgeport, Portsmouth and GC Foster College.
Among the 16 teams are defending champions Bridgeview, beaten finalist, GC Foster, Colours International, Ken’s Wildflower, Portmore Pines CC and Gregory Park CC.
The competition will bowl off on Saturday and will end on February 2 next year.
GC Foster will offer two one-and-a-half-year scholarships to be awarded to two players at the end of the season. The scholarships are to be named in honour of former Mayor George Lee.
The league is also sponsored by Ken’s Wildflower and KLAS ESPN SPORTS FM89.
