Knox upset Denbigh in Junior League
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Knox College pulled off an upset victory over Denbigh High yesterday at Clarendon Park in advancing to the quarter-finals of the ISSA/Digicel Rural Area Junior League netball competition as Group Three winners.
The Spalding-based school, third-placed finishers last season, bested Denbigh 22-17 to end the second-round with a 100 per cent win record and 15 points from their five games played.
Denbigh, last season’s runners-up, were previously unbeaten but failed to matched their Knox counterparts who dominated throughout this close contest – winning every quarter (7-5, 4-2, 6-5), except the second which was tied with 5-5.
The Jackson Road, Clarendon-based Denbigh, who finished in second on 12 points, will now face May Day High in Friday’s quarter-final, while Knox will tackle defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS).
The emerging May Day overcame upstaged STETHS 24-15 in their top-of-the-table clash in Santa Cruz to win Group Two on maximum 15 points.
The other quarter-final ties pit Manchester High against Titchfield High and Holmwood Technical against Herbert Morrison Technical.
Manchester turned back Lacovia 37-19 to top Group One ahead of Herbert Morrison, while Group Four was won by Holmwood, who beat Glenmuir High 26-16 in one of the late tip-offs at Clarendon Park to finish on 15 points. The Portland-based Titchfield finished three points behind Holmwood in second after edging past St Mary High 19-18 at CASE.
Meanwhile, in games of academic interest, Charlemont whipped Edwin Allen 35-8, Tacius Golding beat Claude McKay 30-14, Montego Bay High stopped St Hilda’s 14-10, Yallahs outscored Oracabessa 26-20, while Anchovy got by Petersfield 27-17.
