Sibling loyalty
Andrew ‘Busha’ Nunes, the conditioner who now trains in Barbados, is expected to be in Jamaica to assist his brother Anthony ‘Baba’ Nunes during his time of illness.
Andrew was expected to arrive in the island on Sunday to take over the operations of his brother’s stables for a short period while Anthony recuperates from a heart attack. Andrew is well remembered for his training feats when he was in Jamaica with horses like Restless Babe and Owen Taylor. During his time in Barbados, Andrew has won the title of champion trainer.
Anthony, the younger of the two brothers, fell ill last week Sunday and had to be hospitalised. He is now back home and recuperating well.
In a telephone chat with the Complete Racing Guide, Anthony said things were going well and he expects to be back at his barn in short order.
“It was a scare for me. I am doing well now, thanks to the efforts of the doctors and nurses who assisted me. My family has also been a tower of strength, watching my every move to ensure I do the right things. They (my family) have been a strong source of comfort in this difficult time for me. I have also received good support from friends who have visited and called to wish me well,” he said. What about his return to the track? With his usual gutsy laugh, ‘Baba’ replied “I will just have to wait and see, of course taking advice from the doctors.”
Despite his absence from the track, ‘Baba’ Nunes had a winner on Sunday’s race programme when Believe ridden by Shane Ellis won the sixth race.
Andrew and Anthony are sons of former champion trainer Nigel Nunes.
