Mayberry tennis champions crowned
HILLEL Academy, Immaculate Conception, Montego Bay crowned themselves champions in the 2013 Mayberry Investments High School Team Championships that ended with the finals at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre on Sunday.
Champions Immaculate, seeded at number one in the Girls Under-19 category, defeated unseeded Mount Alvernia from St James 4-0 to capture the title for the seventh consecutive years.
Meanwhile, the boys Under-19 final went down to the deciding set to determine the winner as the players were locked at 3-3. However, Hillel third-seeded team came through strongly to win the third deciding doubles 6-1 to clinch a 4-3 victory over fourth-seeded Ocho Rios High.
The Boys Under-15 title was won by second-seeded Hillel, who defeated defending champions and top-seed Campion College 5-0, while the girls Under-15 crown went to third-seeded Montego Bay High, who secured a convincing 4-1 win over second seeded-Campion College.
The Fairplay award went to Roshane Allen of Wolmer’s Boys, while the Most Valuable Player awards in both categories were won by Nicholas Malcolm of Ocho Rios in the Boys Under-19 and Magan Veira of Immaculate for the Girls Under-19.
In the Boys Under-15, Nicholas Gore of Hillel Academy won, while Shaeda Nickle of Montego Bay took the Girls equivalent.
In semi-final action on Saturday, Hillel defeated defending champions and top-seed Wolmer’s Boys 4-2, while fourth-seeded Ocho Rios High beat second-seed Campion 4-2.
Top-seed Immaculate crushed third-seed Campion College 6-0, while unseeded Mount Alvernia clipped Wolmer’s Girls 4-3 in the Under-19.
Semi-final action in the Boys Under-15, top-seed and defending champions Campion College got past third-seed Wolmer’s 4-3, while second seed Hillel tagged St George’s College 3-0.
In the Gilrs Under-15 semi-finals, second-seed Campion tagged unseeded Wolmer’s Girls 3-0, while third-seed Montego Bay High came out 3-0 winners over defending champions and top-seed Immaculate Conception.
