daCosta Cup semis set
ST Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) will play Port Antonio High in one semi-final while Frome Technical and Garvey Maceo will meet in the other this weekend as the race for the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup titles shift gears.
The teams qualified for the semi-finals following Saturday’s final set of game in the quarter-final round.
STETHS edged pesky Green Island High 1-0 at STETHS to top Group One with seven points, two more than Frome who also had a 1-0 win over Marcus Garvey Technical at Frome.
Former champions Garvey Maceo High also topped Group Two with seven points after drawing with Muschett High 0-0 at Jarrett Park, while Port Antonio High returned to the semi-finals after a similar scoreline against Manchester High to edge Muschett on goal difference, both finishing with four points.
On Saturday, Jovan James scored in the first-half for STETHS whose high-powered scoring machine seems to have slowed down with just two goals in their last three games.
It was the second straight game that top scorer Khesanio Hall had failed to score for STETHS after he had scored in 17 straight games in both the daCosta Cup and Ben Francis Knockout, for a total of 34 goals.
Hall, who played the final five minutes in Jamaica’s 1-0 loss to Trinidad and Tobago in the senior men’s friendly international at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Friday night, had failed to score in STETHS’ 0-0 draw against Frome on Thursday and was playing in this third game in three days.
Midfielder Jahmarley Brissett scored late in the game for Frome as they advanced to the last four for the second straight year after losing to STETHS at this point last year.
Muschett High who had dragged themselves into contention with a series of good results from the Inter-zone round, qualifying for the quarter-finals on goal difference ahead of St James High, were knocked out of the semi-finals on goal difference as they finished on four points, the same as Port Antonio High, who had beaten them 3-0 on a waterlogged field at Carder Park on Wednesday.
