Trevor Simpson makes use of chance ride
On a rather sedate day at Caymanas Park it was yesterday left to Trevor ‘Slicer’ Simpson to provide that bit of excitement necessary for such days.
Simpson, who holds the record for riding the most winners in a single season, turned back the clock when he rode a patient race on Fatabulous in the feature event, the United Racehorse Trainers’ Association Trophy over 1820 metres, to catch and beat longtime leader Jack De Charmer and Laptop to score a two-length victory.
The event lost some of its venom when it was announced that the overwhelming pre-race favourite Royal Vibes was going to be a late non-starter. In addition, title-chasing jockey Dane Nelson stopped riding after the eighth race and thereby gave up the ride on Fantabulous, which Simpson filled with aplomb.
Fantabulous, who covered the 1,820 metres in 1:58.0, is trained by Victor Williams, who was saddling his 16th winner for the year.
This was Simpson’s second winner on the day, having ridden Sunlight Express to victory in the first of the 11 races on tap yesterday.
Racing resumes at Caymanas Park today with a nine-race card featuring the Abbie Granum Memorial Cup over seven furlongs for two-year-olds. Post time for Sunday’s racing is 12:45 pm.
