Typewriter a Super TALAWAH champion
BY OBSERVER RACING WRITER
THE TALAWAH Superstakes was promoted as the clash between the Derby winners Typewriter and Perfect Neighbour, and so it was. Typewriter, under a most astute ride from Shane Ellis, got the job done in convincing style for trainer Spencer Chung.
Ellis made his move just before entering the straight and that was enough to cripple the opposition as they could not recuperate to mount any sort of challenge.
Perfect Neighbour lost nothing in defeat as he really ran well and almost made it. Having watched the video of the race several times, it would seem that Perfect Neighbour’s loss can be attributed to his inability to change leads to add that extra gear to his effort. Notwithstanding, it is now firmly established that Perfect Neighbour is the best three-year-old this season.
Ellis outsmarted his fellow jockeys and that was simply that in the Superstakes. Commanding Chief ran rather well to finish third, while Exotic Gold performed out of her skin to finish fourth and the best filly of three in the race.
Chung, who has emerged as a trainer of significant note, was winning his first Superstakes while for Ellis it was his second time having won in 2003 aboard Pittacus.
“This was a tremendous run by Typewriter. He was as fit as I could train him and under the guidance of Shane (Ellis) he performed well. I cannot praise Shane (Ellis) enough for his handling of Typewriter. Both Typewriter and Shane were simply magnificent,” trainer Chung said.
This win by Typewriter has now propelled him to the slot of best stayer in the land, taking over from Mark My Word who died earlier in the year.
