St Hugh’s carve out win over St Catherine in urban action
FORMER many-time champions St Hugh’s carved out a convincing 38-23 win over St Catherine in their Senior League encounter in the 2013 ISSA/Digicel Urban Area High Schoolgirls Netball Competition match at the Leila Robinson Courts yesterday.
The win pushed the unbeaten St Hugh’s High aggregation to the top of the points standings in Group Two with 12 points, followed by defending champions The Queen’s and St Catherine High locked on nine points each.
It will be very interesting to see what will happen in the final round of matches scheduled to be played on Monday, with St Hugh’s facing Queen’s, and St Catherine going up against St Jago High.
There is a possibility that all three teams could finish with the same number of points, if Queen’s should beat St Hugh’s. Goal difference could decide the top two schools advancing to the semi-finals.
In yesterday’s feature match of the afternoon between St Hugh’s and St Catherine, the early exchanges were closely contested with St Hugh’s leading 4-3. They were locked at 6-6 before the winners ended the first quarter with a 9-6 lead.
St Hugh’s dominated the second quarter by outscoring their opponents through shooters Kadie-Ann Duhaney and Jennellee Jones, as they combined to score nine goals to St Catherine’s four to go into the half-time break leading 18-10.
Third-quarter action was again dominated by St Hugh’s as they found the target more frequently than St Catherine’s shooters Tashana Clarke and Rohanna Dixon. St Hugh’s controlled the match from then onwards, and at the final break had assumed a commanding 30-18 lead.
Assistant coach of St Hugh’s Nymwalie Gordon said it was a good victory and something the team had trained for.
“St Hugh’s were the ranked outsiders coming into the group, and our approach to the game was really precise. The team played to the best of their ability and our strong defence line held off St Catherine,” Gordon said.
Meanwhile, defending champions Queen’s returned to winning ways with a convincing 49-8 win over Alpha Academy.
In other Senior League results, Camperdown High defeated Ardenne High 41-15; Norman Manley High got past Mona High 24-2; Excelsior High got the better of St Jago High 33-31; Holy Childhood and St Andrew High played to a 28-28 draw.
