St Catherine, St Hugh’s in crucial match-up
ST CATHERINE and St Hugh’s will be involved in a very crucial match as the 2013 ISSA/Digicel Urban Area High Schoolgirls Senior League netball competition continues this afternoon at the Leila Robinson Courts, beginning at 3:00.
Both St Catherine and St Hugh’s are unbeaten and locked on nine points each from three matches with defending champions, The Queen’s, are on six points in second.
A win for either team will move them one step closer to a place in the semi-finals, with one round remaining.
Fresh from their sensational win over champions Queen’s, St Catherine comes up against another tough opponent in St Hugh’s, who have won the Senior League title on many occasions.
Phyllis Thompson, head coach of St Catherine, said she expects another tough assignment, similarly to the one against Queen’s.
“It will be another big challenge for us and we are going to play St Hugh’s, the same way we defeated Queen’s by applying the early pressure, score quick goals and take an early lead going into the half-time break,” Thompson said.
The St Catherine’s coach admits that St Hugh’s is a very good team, but “we are going out there to play our usual game”.
Meanwhile, Roy Pryce, coach of many-time Senior League champions, St Hugh’s knows that St Catherine won’t be an easy team to defeat as he was in attendance when they beat Queen’s on Wednesday.
His defence will have to be very sharp to hold off shooters Tashina Clarke and Rohana Dixon, with support from attacking players Rakeem Phillips, Seshawn Fennell and Ruschell Barnaby.
Meanwhile, defending champions Queen’s who lead Group Two with nine points in the Junior League should easily beat Bridgeport High and maintain their unbeaten streak. This game is scheduled to start at 2:15 pm.
Norman Manley, coached by Hamilton, will be looking for their fourth win of the second round when they play Alpha Academy at 1:30 pm. Norman Manley lead Group One of the Junior League with nine points.
The other matches scheduled in the Junior League are St Hugh’s High vs Gaynstead High, St Catherine vs Camperdown High, Hydel High vs Meadowbrook High at 1:30 pm, Tarrant High vs St Jago High at 2:15 pm.
Senior League matches scheduled are Norman Manley High vs Mona High, Holy Childhood High vs St, Andrew High at 2:15 pm, Ardenne High vs Camperdown High at 3:00 pm.
Alpha Academy will take on defending Senior League champions The Queen’s, Excelsior High do battle with St Jago High, beginning at 3:15 pm.
