Six hunt D’Cup semi-final spots today
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Another dramatic day is anticipated today as six of the eight quarter-finalists go after four places in the semi-finals of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup as the third round closes with four games, all set to start at 3:00 pm.
Marcus Garvey Technical and Manchester High are out of contention after losing their first two quarter-final games, but will have big roles to play in helping to decide who go ahead or join them in going home early.
Marcus Garvey will play Frome Technical at Frome Sports Club in one game, while Manchester High will be up against Port Antonio High at Kirkvine in the other.
Mathematically all three contenders in each group could end on identical points, which would necessitate tiebreakers to decide who advance to next weekend’s semi-finals.
It took tiebreakers to decide three of the quarter-finalists and it could go down to even a second tiebreaker today to decide the close races that are lined-up.
Former champions Garvey Maceo lead Group Two with maximum six points and look to have the easiest route to the top four, needing only a draw against Muschett High at Jarrett Park to secure group honours.
Despite being beaten 3-0 on a muddy and water-logged field at Carder Park by Port Antonio High, Muschett have shown their mettle, coming out on top in must-win games.
Nickoy Anderson had scored back-to-back doubles for Muschett leading into Wednesday’s game and the Trelawny school will be hoping he gets back on track against a Garvey Maceo team that has conceded one goal in their last five matches.
At the other end of the field, Ryan Scott leads the Clarendon school with four goals, but they will have other scoring options from the likes of Ishmael Curry, Derval Huntley and Enrico Ricketts.
Port Antonio High have outscored all other teams left in the competition since the Inter-zone round with 19 goals and will face a Manchester High team with nothing but pride to play for.
St Elizabeth Technical will return to the comfort of their home ground after having their 17-game scoring run snapped playing away to Frome Technical at Frome on Thursday. They will face Green Island today.
