Port Antonio romp by Muschett 3-0
Port Antonio, Portland: Port Antonio High rebounded from last Saturday’s loss to whip Muschett High 3-0 in their ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup football game at Carder Park under muddy conditions.
Daniel Roberts led the way with a brace in the fourth and 80th minutes, while Christopher Smith added a 61st-minute strike.
Port Antonio relished to the favourable condition and went ahead when Roberts picked up the ball midway the Muschett half on the left flank and fired past an advancing David Swaby in goal.
Muschett quickly launched an attack through Akeem Graham, Charlie Grant and Nicoy Anderson but were not able to penetrate Cardel Kennedy and Javoy Belnavis in defence.
Port Antonio went further ahead when Christopher Smith picked up a ball from Roberts, rounded one defender, and as Swaby advanced, fired home, as the ball lodged into the roof of the net.
They added the third 10 minutes from the end, thanks to Roberts.
Winning coach Carl Brissett was elated. “The team rebounded from their loss last Saturday and played with a lot of confidence. They knew that they had to win this game and adjusted to the conditions and produced the required goods. I’m happy for this victory.”
Losing coach Hugh Solomon was not pleased with the playing conditions. “We should not have played under these conditions as it was just mud and we are not used to playing in this type of condition. We are used to a passing, fast game and this just could not happen,” he lamented.
In other games Garvey Maceo defeated Manchester High 2-0; Green Island defeated Marcus Garvey 3-2, while the crucial fixture between St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Frome had to be called off due to a waterlogged field at the Frome Sport Complex.
The field was covered with water after heavy afternoon showers that pounded several sections of Westmoreland. The teams took to the field after waiting sometime for the water to run off, but at 4:25 pm the officials called off the game.
The game is slated to be played today at Frome.
