Catherine upset The Queen’s 29-24
ST CATHERINE High pulled off a sensational 29-24 upset win over defending champions The Queen’s School in their feature ISSA/Digicel Urban Area High School Senior League encounter at the Leila Robinson Courts yesterday.
By virtue of this victory, St Catherine jumped into the lead in Group Two with nine points ahead of Queen’s with six points. Both teams have played three matches with two rounds remaining in the second round.
It was also sweet revenge for the Phyllis Thompson-coached St Catherine aggregation who lost by one goal to Marvette Anderson’s The Queen’s in their semi-final encounter last year.
St Catherine led 6-3 at the first break, 11-9 at half-time and 20-13 at the end of the third quarter.
Although Queen’s had their three national players, Shanice Beckford who came late in the third quarter due to an injured finger, Khadijah Williams and Shamera Sterling in action, this did not stop St Catherine from taking control of the match.
Thompson said that her players came out very confident that they could have beaten The Queen’s and it was a very good win.
In the Junior League results, defending champions The Queen’s outclassed Meadowbrook High 41-9; Norman Manley High defeated St Catherine High 27-19; Gaynstead High got past Alpha Academy 19-17; Camperdown High defeated St Hugh’s 24-9, and Tarrant High outscored Hydel High 22-17.
In other Senior League games, St Hugh’s High defeated Excelsior High 38-13; St Jago High cruised past Alpha Academy 37-23; Norman Manley High defeated Ardenne High 36-26, and St Andrew High got the better of Mona High 26-21.
The competition continues tomorrow at 1:30 pm.
