Holmwood overcome tough Titchfield in Senior League
HOLMWOOD Technical continued their march towards the quarter-finals of the ISSA/Digicel Rural Area Senior League netball competition, but were made to work extremely hard against Group Four rivals Titchfield High for their third consecutive win yesterday.
Following comfortable victories in their two previous encounters, the defending champions were expected to face their first real test in Titchfield, who had also notched consecutive victories coming into this fixture.
And as it turned out, the Carline Graham-Powell Christiana-based girls were indeed pushed to the limit by their Portland counterparts, managing only a 32-31 victory in a nail-biting contest at GC Foster College.
Despite the scare, this win means the defending champions are now sole leaders of Group Four on nine points, three ahead of Titchfield and Marymount, who turned back the winless Clarendon College, 28-21.
Bishop Gibson (nine) also took over sole leadership in Group One with an impressive 45-26 win over the previously unbeaten Manning’s School at the St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), where Manchester High also notched their third win on the bounce, beating Frome Technical 48-17 to share Group Two honours with STETHS, who thrashed Muschett High 51-7 at Belmont Academy.
Denbigh High maintained their hold on Group Three following a 64-25 beating of Old Harbour High, while Edwin Allen kept pace with a 31-10 triumph over St Mary High.
Meanwhile, in Junior League play, title holders STETHS were brutal against Montego Bay High, beating the St James school 50-3 to inch closer to a quarter-final berth from Group Two.
Manchester-based May Day are tied on nine points with STETHS after continuing their impressive start in a 30-10 victory over Frome.
Manchester, who defeated Petersfield High 29-11, head Group One, while Denbigh and Knox College remain atop Group Three with three wins apiece following respective victories against Charlemont and Yallahs.
Holmwood, like their seniors, just managed to hold off Titchfield 17-13 to stay ahead in Group Four.
