Mixed results for Caribbean swimmers in Japan
TOKYO, Japan (CMC)- – Caribbean swimmers posted mixed results in the Japan leg of the FINA World Cup series on the weekend.
Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson collected her fourth consecutive gold medal in the 100-metre breaststroke while Top Trinidad and Tobago swimmer George Bovell had to settle for a bronze medal.
The 24-year-old Jamaican shrugged off a strong challenge from Russia’s Iulia Efimova to prevail in 1:02.99 minutes, just .09 outside of her personal best set in Dubai.
Efimova, who has not been able to beat the three-time Jamaican Olympian on the Asian cluster of this leg, finished second in a personal best of 1:03.02 minutes.
Mio Motegi of Japan was third in 1:05.02 minutes.
Atkinson also took the silver in the 50-metre breaststroke on day two of competitions in 29.06 seconds. She was beaten by Efimova (28.71).
Meantime, Bovell achieved his third place in the Men’s 50m freestyle increasing his medal haul to date in the Cup to 12 (one gold, four silver and seven bronze).
He will conclude this year’s FINA Swimming World Cup campaign with the last leg in Beijing, China, from November 13-14.
