St Cecelia truly the best
SAINT Cecelia reigned supreme in the 25th running of the TALAWAH Caribbean Sprint Championship yesterday at Caymanas Park.
The seven-year-old chestnut mare out of Burning Marque – She’s On Wheels by Bates Motel closed her astounding career by winning this particular championship for the fourth time in succession, which allowed her to equal the longtime record of the mighty Eros. The win was her 24th lifetime victory.
“It is really a bitter-sweet moment for me. I am happy she won the Caribbean Sprint Championship again, but to see her race for the last time and winning brought tears to my eyes. St Cecelia came in style and has gone out in great style, like the true champion she is today (yesterday),” said her rather sad-looking trainer Spencer Chung.
Her jockey yesterday Shane Ellis, said he too was having different emotions.
“St Cecelia is such a good and nice horse. I am just happy I got the opportunity to ride her on so many different occasions. One of the best I have ever ridden,” Ellis said.
The outstanding mare did just enough to hold off a good field over 1,200 metres, winning by one-and-a-half lengths from Traditional Prince (Ameth Robles), with Potcheen (Omar Walker) third in a fast 1:11.2 minutes.
