JC trounce Hydel to book place in semis
JAMAICA College (JC) hammered Hydel High 4-0 yesterday at the rain-hit Constant Spring complex to seal progression to the semi-final of the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup football competition.
Sheldon McKoy guided the JC juggernaut with first-half goals in the 18th and 31st minutes. Captain Junior Flemmings, in the 78th, and Akino Bailey, in the second minute of time added on, completed the rout.
JC topped Group H with maximum nine points from three matches, while Hydel ended with six, and Charlie Smith High and Kingston College finished at the base with a point each.
Only the winners of each second-round group advance to the semi-final.
Title-holders St George’s College have already qualified from Group K.
JC’s coach Miguel Coley said his team took a while to recover from the Walker Cup Knockout elimination recently, but added they are now back on track.
In yesterday’s early match at the venue, Charlie Smith High rested a host of regular starters, but still held Kingston College to a 3-3 result.
Owayne Stone with a double in the 14th and 22nd minutes and Kashane Jones in the second minute of stoppage time scored for Kingston College.
Charlie Smith’s goals came from Anthony Benjamin (sixth minute), Rafael Deacon (70th) and Shamar Pryce (88th). Both ‘Charlie’ and KC entered the game without any chance of progressing.
In the day’s feature match that Hydel needed to win to advance, JC opened the scoring when Flemmings laid off a pass to the long-limbed McKoy, who rifled home a grounder from close range.
Midway the half, the heavens burst open and McKoy poured further agony on Maxwell’s team with a 31st-minute header.
Hydel pressed for a goal in soggy conditions in the second half, but instead it was JC who pulled farther ahead through Flemmings. The national youth player was first to react to the rebound from his right-footed free kick and lashed in with a left-footed half volley.
Bailey put the icing on the cake when he, too, booted home on the second attempt.
The second round continues today with matches in Groups I and J at Constant Spring.
In the 1:00 pm kick-off, Wolmer’s Boys, leaders of Group J with six points, clash with out-of-contention Holy Trinity High (zero).
In the 3:00 pm game, the Group I leaders Excelsior High (six points) are poised to seal their semi-final spot when they face Ascot
High (zero).
Both Wolmer’s and Excelsior only need a point to advance as the respective group winners.
